How To Properly Use A Pregnancy Test At Home
If you are suspected as pregnant, you can use over-the-counter pregnancy test kit which you can purchase in any drugstore near your area. This works by detecting if your urine has a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This is also known as the pregnancy hormone which can only be found in pregnant women.
In this article we will help you to prepare before doing the test and the steps you will perform in doing the test.
Let us start with the preparation before taking the test. First you have to purchase a pregnancy test kit of course. If it is possible make it two having different brands just to make sure you got the right result.
Once you’ve got the kit, you have to figure out when to take the test. Experts say that it is best to take the test at least a week after you missed your last period. This is because hCG develops in a woman’s body only after a fertilized egg implants in her uterus. This implantation typically occurs in the 6th day after the sperm unites with the egg that is why having the test too early might not give you the right results. Perform this test in the morning because it is the best time where your hCG levels are highest because the urine is concentrated. In case you have irregular periods, you should wait for at least 3 weeks after having intercourse before you take a pregnancy test.
Here are the steps you can follow in doing the test:
1. Sit in a toilet and urinate
Use the testing kit or a small plastic cup to collect urine sample. Only use the midstream sample in doing the test. This means that you have to pea first outside the container and then you will only collect the midstream urine.
2. Use a dropper to place a urine sample on the test stick
This is only applicable when you are doing a cup method because some pregnancy test kit requires you to dip the absorbent end of the test kit. Put the right amount of urine based on what is stated in the instruction paper that comes with the kit.
The time might vary depending on the brand of test kit you are using but it is typically between 1 to 5 minutes while some test kit requires you to wait for up to 10 minutes to see the end result.
4. Understand the result
Once the amount of time for waiting had passed, check the test result and the red line symbols will indicate if you are pregnant or not. Some other brands are showing digital word “pregnant” or “not pregnant”. For the brands who are using the line symbols, you will know you are pregnant if you see double lines.
After performing the above steps, you might also want to visit your doctor for better diagnosis if you are pregnant or not so that you can prepare properly.
